What To Look For In A Quality Perfume

October 29, 2014

Perfume can be quite expensive and while you may be tempted buy less expensive brands, there are some things you need to consider. The truth is not all perfumes are high quality. Some may even smell sour or bitter. While you may be able to look at a package and tell that the perfume isn’t good quality, you can’t look at a quality made bottle and box and know that it’s going to be a good buy. However, there are several things you can look for. Here’s what to look for in a quality perfume.

Check the Color

The color of quality perfume should be consistent throughout the bottle. If it looks like the ingredients have separated in the bottle, the perfume is poor quality. One bottle should also look identical to others in the batch. Last, but not least, the perfume shouldn’t look murky or cloudy. If there is material floating in the bottle, the perfume is either not good quality or very old.

Look for an Expiration Date

Many people don’t realize this, but perfume does go bad. If you see a sale that seems too good to be true, check the expiration date before shelling out your hard earned money. Unfortunately, not all perfumes carry an expiration date. However, some do carry a manufactured date. Perfume is good for up to two years after this date. The last way to tell the date is to look up the batch code number. Online you’ll find a calculator that will give the expiration date based on this code.

Smell the Perfume

Open the bottle or spray the perfume into the air. Does it have a sour or bitter smell? A good quality perfume is made with essential oils and doesn’t contain fat. Lower quality perfumes may contain oil, which can go bad over time and cause the perfume to smell off.

Shop with Companies That Offer Guarantees

Last, but not least, shop with a well known company that offers a guarantee. You can double up your efforts by shopping in stores that offer refunds, such as high end department stores.

Perfume can be very expensive and finding out you’ve wasted your money on low quality perfume can be irritating. Thankfully, there are ways you can determine whether or not a perfume is of good quality. Remember to look at the color, check the date, smell the perfume and always shop with brands that guarantee their products.
