Agape Tattoos

Agape is a Koine Greek word that means love. An agape tattoo for many carries a lot of special meaning.  The word itself is often found in Christian theology as well, so it is not surprising at all that some who have decided to get an agape tattoo are devout Christians.

The Meaning of Agape Tattoos

For Christians, the word agape itself has deeper meaning than just the love that we usually share with other people. It becomes a special symbol of love because agape, at least in Christian theology, means the love that God has for us as mankind. This kind of love is of course different from other types like philia or eros, because it has certain characteristics that others do not posses.

The word represents the unconditional love our God has for us. It is divine, active, thoughtful, self-sacrificing, and volitional. This is the kind of love that God and only God could show. By getting the word agape tattooed on the body, it can serve as a reminder that God protects and loves us unconditionally.

It isn’t uncommon to see the tattoo done in Greek or Hebrew instead of in English.
