A Guide to Makeup Expiration Dates

Using expired makeup can cause skin irritation and breakouts and many products do not let you know when their products will spoil as it is not required by the FDA. So make sure you know when your cosmetics expire so you can toss them out and replace them! This “rule-of-thumb” guide lets you know around the time that your favorite cosmetics will expire… take note.

First off, be sure to clean your brushes at least twice monthly to prevent the spread of acne causing bacteria. Mascara needs to be replaced ever 3-4 months or when you notice it getting clumpy or starting to smell strange. Foundation and concealer last a little longer (6 months to a year) while powder products such as blush or eye shadow last up to 2 years. Always remember that anti-aging products and those with SPF in the ingredients tend to expire quicker but a way to make them last longer is to keep these products our of sunlight.  UV rays destroy preservatives which will make your products break down and expire faster.
