C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries Mentha Lip Tint in Berry Shimmer Review

Rarely do I get a lip product that I absolutely love the taste of. Normally what happens is I just do my best not to lick my lips because of the waxy feel of most lip balms, but when it comes to C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries’ Mentha Lip Tint in Berry Shimmer, it’s the exact opposite for me. I can’t stop licking my lips! This formula which contains 2% peppermint oil tastes so good, I’m always so tempted to just lick my lips nonstop.

One thing I don’t quite like about this product is the packaging. It’s rather hard to control the amount of product you get to come out, and usually I end up squeezing more than what I needed out. But in any case, the packaging makes it look more like a lip gloss than a balm for me.

C.O. Bigelow lip tint

Despite the fact that it looks more like a lip gloss than a lip balm, this product is actually great for moisturizing lips. It’s really glossy, has a hint of shimmer and as with any mint product, provides a cooling sensation that can also be responsible for a slight plumping of the lips. Who wouldn’t want that?

The label says that this product is mint-infused for fresh breath, though I can’t quite see how or why a product on the lips would be able to affect your breath all that much. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m skeptical of this claim. Personally, I still wouldn’t go huffing on people when I’ve got garlic breath! I’m sure you wouldn’t too! Haha.

The berry tint on this gloss looks amazing in the tube, but when applied on the lips it’s really, really sheer. It looks like I just put on a clear gloss with the slightest hint of color and shimmer. For a so-called lip tint, this is something that I’m not particularly happy with, especially since I’ve seen cheek & lip tints do a better job. Look at the pics below to see what I mean:

Despite the failure in the tinting of the product… at least it doesn’t fail with its moisturizing claim—this thing really is moisturizing! And I mean really! I love wearing this when my lips are uber dry. Not only is it moisturizing, but it’s super soothing too!

Let’s have a quick look at the ingredients for this product:

Polybutene, hydrogenated polyisobutene, petrolatum, octyldodecanol, menthe piperita (peppermint oil), canola oil, silica silylate, quaternium-18 hectorite, sodium saccharin, methyl diisopropyl propionamide, propylene carbonate, benzyl alcohol, limonene, linalool, mica, titanium dioxide (CI 77891), iron oxides (CI77491, CI 77499), carmine (CI 75470).

Note that the mint used is 100% natural (though at only 2% of the formula, I don’t really think it matters all that much—especially since the other ingredients aren’t all natural).

One natural ingredient in this formula is Carmine, which actually surprised me since I haven’t taken a closer look since I got this item. Carmine is made by boiling dried insects in water, which extracts the carminic acid from them—the resulting product then goes through further processing. For me, this kind of icks me out a bit—aside from the fact that tons of little insects had to die for the making of this product, the thought of where the ingredient came from…eugh. At the very least it’s really far down the list of ingredients, which means there’s little of it present in the formula—but still!

Anyway, in summation, this product for me is something that is effectively moisturizing, though not really all that effective when it comes to lip tinting. At the price of $7.50 for a 14g tube, it’s not so bad, though it’s way more than what I would normally pay for on a lip balm/tint. This particular variant of the product looks to be discontinued, but can still be bought on C.O. Bigelow’s Amazon for $9.95. However, there are many other variants of the lip tint, lip shine and lip balm on the C.O. Bigelow website.

Trending Pastels: Sweet and Sugary

This season my favorite colors are trending and I’m not referring to the neon accessories and brightly colored pants. Even though color is fun – light pastel colors are just as fun. In fact I love all of the pastel makeup tones that will be trending this spring. They’re extremely girlie, feminine, and create a natural look that’s perfect for spring and beyond. So what are my favorite ways to incorporate sweet pastels this season? Read on to find out.

Pastel Cosmetics for Spring

Pastel Nail Colors:

If you’re in the habit of painting your nails black for the fall and winter months now is the time to break into the pastel colors. Find some amazing nail polish that you love from brands like OPI or Essie and either get a manicure at a salon or paint them yourself. One of my favorite colors is mint green – a cross between turquoise and green (in my opinion), this color is on its way to becoming the best pastel color yet. I personally can’t wait to find the perfect mint green purse to go with my mint green nails.

Pastel Lip Tints:

If you love the natural look that is elegant yet pretty, this trend will become a favorite of yours. Pastel lip tints are easy to apply and look extremely lovely. In addition to lip tints, you can also pair your lip gloss or lipstick with a pastel dress and pumps and you have the perfect spring time outfit. Don’t forget other pastel makeup including glistening shadow, which is coming up next. Now all you need is a date!

Pastel Eye Shadow:

Sigh, eye shadows are so beautiful. Especially the light colored pastel shadows. If you want just a subtle glimmer or a richer pastel shade, it all depends how you apply your pastel colors on your eyelids. Shimmering eye shadows illuminate your face and make your eyes look fresh and wide awake. For the mascara you’ll want to keep this natural as well because you will want to allow your eye shadow to take center stage. Your glimmering eye shadow is stunning enough all on its own.

Enjoy the pastels this spring and summer and show off your illuminating face at your home, office, or wherever you are on a day to day basis with gorgeous makeup. A sheer cream blush and extra soft colors on your clothing ensemble will complete the look – you’re ready to enjoy this sugary sweet trend already.

How To Make Lip Color Last Longer

Lipstick is a popular way to alter or update your look easily and inexpensively. The right lip color can convey an attitude of sultriness, innocence, or professionalism. However, one of the biggest problems with lip color is that it tends to wear off quickly. Faded or cracked lip color can look even worse than naked lips, and the worst part is, you may not even realize your color has slipped away before it is too late. Longer-wear lipsticks are now available, but you do not need to spend the extra dollars to ensure your color lasts all day. Simply learn the best way to prepare your lips and apply your lipstick to keep it looking bright and fresh for hours.

Tips For Long Lasting Lipstick

Step One: Prepare Your Lips

Surely you have noticed that your skin looks clearer and makeup goes on more smoothly when you exfoliate and moisturize regularly. Regular exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells and rough edges, leaving a smooth surface to which makeup can stick more easily. Your lips can be exfoliated in the same way you exfoliate your face, and you will notice you have smoother, plusher lips almost immediately.

To prevent chapping or cracking, you also want to ensure your lips receive adequate moisture. The easiest way to do this is by using a high-quality lip balm after exfoliation but prior to applying lip color. The balm will protect and moisturize your lips and serve as a smooth, even base for your lipstick.

Step Two: Always Use Lip Liner

When you are in a hurry, you may be inclined to skimp on the details. Lip liner is one quick trick you should never skip, however. By applying lip liner in either a neutral tone or a color that matches your preferred lip color, you effectively reign in your lipstick, preventing it from bleeding out into the skin around your mouth. Lip liner also carefully defines the edges of your lips, leading to a complete, polished look once your makeup has been applied. A long wearing liner, such as those from Make Up For Ever, applied all over the lip, will also create a long lasting lip tint.

Step Three: Apply Lipstick in Thin Coats

You should aim to apply two very thin coats of lipstick rather than one very thick coat. Once your lips have been primed and lined, use a lip brush to carefully coat every surface of your lips with color. Allow about one minute for the color to set and dry, and then repeat the process. Two light coats will retain their brightness and color for longer than one heavy coat, which is likely to crack or smear before it can fully set.

Another option is to use a lip stain. Apply a quality stain, such as Benetint, let it dry, and then follow up with one coat of lipstick or gloss over it.

Step Four: Blot Your Color

Using a very thin tissue, carefully blot your lips. Your goal is to remove any excess lipstick, allowing what remains to set and effectively stain your lips. For an even stronger set, dust your lips lightly with translucent face powder through the tissue as you blot. You do not need to blot in between coats, only after the final coat.

Step Five: Add Gloss for Extra Shine

Finally, slick your lips with a clear, high-shine gloss. This will both amplify the color and add an incomparable sparkle and shine to your smile. You can easily re-gloss your lips throughout the day to refresh and enhance your color without needing to reapply lipstick. Pucker up and head out into the world, confident your lips are looking their absolute best.
