So, I have been perusing various photo galleries from New York Fashion Week, paying particular attention to the makeup. Something that jumped out at me was a trend toward bareness for spring 2010. I have seen a number of faces with a dramatic eye and bare lips. I have also seen plenty of looks that included a pretty eye and blush, but again, bare, or nearly bare lips. Take, for example, this look from Davidelfin (which I happen to like quite a bit). It has more lip color (which I suspect is natural for the model), than many looks that I have seen:

And then there is this look done by MAC Cosmetics for BCGB. Bareness at its finest!

I can’t really complain when it looks as good as it does on these BCBG models:

So what if you don’t want to be completely bare this spring? Well, you can still follow the trend by applying a nude or natural lip look—something that will never go out of style for either your lip look or your entire face.

M.A.C. N Collection Lip Items

As I wrote over at Beauty and Fashion Tech, I love the M.A.C. N Collection! The neutral eye shadows in particular are perfect for me. The collection was used quite a bit on the fashion week runways for the spring collections, with the Luca Luca face chart below as one example.

I love several of the lip shades as well. If you are looking for a truly nude or neutral lip, or if you love tan lip shades, this is a collection to look at. When might you want to wear a nude lip? Either when you are going for an all natural look overall, or when you have something else played up. For example, if you are wearing a brightly colored eye, such as the look above that uses the Parrot shade from the originals collection, let that stand out by keeping the lips mellow. Same if you are wearing stand out blush or bronzer.

Below are the lip liner and lipstick shades. The Sublime Culture lip liner has quickly become one of my favorites and it works nicely with shade 3N. If you have read my Beauty and Fashion Tech review of the Cat Cosmetic lip liner, the shade on this one is similar and the feel is just as great (I still also adore my Cat liner though!):

The lipglass shades (below) are also quite nice for adding shine to your nude lip look. I have been wearing N2 quite a bit.

Cranberry Red Lips From CoverGirl

I have been into deeper lip shades lately and have been playing quite a bit with reds. One of my current favorite red lip looks comes from CoverGirl products. So the bonus is that it doesn’t cost a fortune!

I am wearing this look on my lips in the picture. Funny thing is that I was also messing with some of the new spring pinks on the rest of my face. Fortunately, those were so sheer and had worn off a bit so that they didn’t show up well in the photo, because red lips with pink cheeks and shimmery peach eyeshadow looks rather silly!

If you go for Red lips, I suggest a neutral shade smoky eye and no blush. At most, maybe just a bit of bronzer for contour. No super shimmer either! When wearing red, Let the lips stand out on their own.

To create the CoverGirl red lips look, I start with CoverGirl Outlast Smoothwear Lip Liner in Wine (number 125). This is a berry red lip liner, so it works well with both brighter reds and darker reds. It also is one of the few long wearing products that I really like. I’m not a fan of the long wearing lip stains and such, but the pencil is just fine and it does wear fairly long.Next, I add a layer of CoverGirl TruShine Lip Color in Cranberry Shine (number 500). This cranberry red lipstick is a beautiful shade. TruShine is also a good name, because it does have a good shine quality for a lipstick. It is on the bright side, but not quite as bright as a fire engine red. It also wears quite well. Usually, I blot and put on a second coat before adding gloss.

Gloss is not required, but I like it both for the moisturizing feel and for the extra shine. So I top the lipstick off with CoverGirl Wetslicks Lipstick in Fire Fly (number 325). A bonus of wearing gloss is that it is easier to quickly reapply and can can make the lipstick last longer. This bright berry red gloss is also great on its own for a sheer red look.

With each product running in the $5-7 range, this is a great look for not a lot of money.
