The best balm list is split by tinted and untinted products and is generally in order of favorites as far as the top 5 or so go. But after that it is hard to pick favorites among the items, as they are all good products. You really can’t go wrong with any of these nice balms. 1: Badger Cocoa Butter Balm: Big, fat, and tasty, plus natural with great moisturizing ingredients and made by a cool company. What else could you want? Badger is our perennial number one favorite!

2: Murad Vitalic Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector SPF 15: For the most part, I tried to keep gel tubes off this list because I classify them as glosses instead of a balms, but Murad’s lip protector is simply too good not to be on the list. This super moisturizing gel tastes great, gives lots of shine and offers SPF 15 protection.

3: Eos Lip Balm: The cool Eos lip balm pods are all the rage and the balm is pretty darn good too! Fun to carry and great to wear.

4: Votre Vu: Votre Vu makes a luxurious, buttery balm with a nice vanilla almond taste that comes packaged in a lipstick type tube. For hand cream fans, you can also get the Duette, which is a tube of particularly nice hand cream with the balm in the lid.

5: Fresh Sugar Rose: A cult classic for a reason, Fresh Sugar Rose has a luxurious feel with a wonderful scent and taste. This is the best luxury level lip balm that you can buy.

6: Maui Mike’s Lip Balm SPF 15, Surfer’s Mint: A popular balm that has a great texture that is not too waxy and not too oily. It wears very well and offers SPF protection.

7: Caudalie Lip Conditioner: This buttery balm has great texture and also is good sized, making it a great choice for those who like a bigger balm.

8: Palmer Coco Butter Balm: A nice standard lip balm. Buttery and long wearing. Look for it at your local drugstore.

1: Benetint Balm: Benetint is the original lip stain, and their balm packs in the pigment for pretty rose colored lips with a dose of moisture. Don’t be afraid of the red pot, the tint is very natural looking.

2: Elizabeth Arden 8 hour Lip Protector: A balm that wears very well and gives off a good amount of tint.

3: Yves Saint Laurent VOLUPTÉ SHEER CANDY Glossy Balm Crystal Color: Expensive, but the choice of pretty and sheer shades makes it worth it.

4: Korres Lip Butter: lightly tinted natural balms.

5: Dior Addict Lip Glow: Claims that the tint will adjust to your perfect color. I don’t buy into that, but I still love this product for its pretty tint and great conditioning.

6: Laura Mercier Stick Gloss: Good tint in a quality balm.

7: MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner: These pot balms have a good amount of pigment and moisturizing properties.

8: Tokidoki Gelato Lip Balm Stain: I love Totkidoki, and their lip balm stain does a nice job at providing color and conditioning.

9: Chapstick True Shimmer: A balm with a shimmery tint to it. Try it over standard lip stain for comfortable and neat look.

The article linked below takes a look at the best and worst lip balms from Total Beauty readers. I found the list a bit interesting because I don’t agree with a number of items on it. For example, the article lists Chapstick True Shimmer among the worst, which is one of my favorite standby balms. At the same time though, I totally agree with the choice of Burt’s Bees Lifeguard’s Choice as worst balm. It tends to be hard, leaves a white tint, and has too strong of a flavor.

In the best lip balm categories, I don’t really agree with including Bonne Belle lip smackers, which are OK, but nothing outstanding and, with the exception of the MAC balm, the others listed are not super special to me.

Crazy Rumors makes some great balms in general, but a new favorite overall balm for me is their HibisKiss tinted balm.  Often, tinted balms lack the level of actual tint that I would like to have, but HibisKiss has a decent amount of pigment to it. The tint is still sheer, but it does show up–something that doesn’t happen with the tinted balms of  some brands!   The shades are pretty too.

Overall, the balm itself is a medium buttery texture, so it isn’t overly waxy or so light that you end up reapplying often. That is just about where I like my balms to be. So this one has been getting a lot of use from me lately! Crazy Rumors products are also all natural and vegan.

The MAC surf baby collection has a whole host of products, but what I love the most from it are a couple of the lipsticks and the suntints spf 20 lip balms. I was sent two of the the lipsticks from the collection, and they both happen to be shades that I really like. Below are swatches of the surf baby lipsticks in Bust Out and Hibiscus. I’m not sure that I can pull off the purple of Bust Out, although I do love it. However, I suspect Hibiscus will get a lot of wear from me this summer.

The surf baby collection also has four lipglass shades. Below are swatches of two of them in the shades Good Lovin and Krazy Kahuna. If you are a fan of brown shades, Krazy Kahuna really is quite nice. Good Lovin is a pretty champagne pink.

The lipsticks and lipglasses are nice, but what really stands out for me in the collection are the Suntints SPF 20 Liquid Lip Balms. These really are nice tube lip glosses with a light tint and good amount of spf. They feel great and look great too. I completely love mine!

The MAC Surf Baby Collection is set to hit the shelves on May 26. However, the MAC collections always seem to show up a bit earlier that listed.

You guessed it! Or Did You? It’s that sleek, provocative tube of sensual colored lip gloss.  For some of you it’s the sultry hues and shades of lipsticks. I decided to become the roving reporter for this article.  So I took a visit to three different locations:  Wal-Mart (what an experience, Yes I’m a beauty snob), MAC and Neiman Marcus.

The most I can say about Wal-Mart, is that I got in and out.  It gave me a headache.  But before my exit I observed the behavior of the women, young and mature (don’t like the word old except when describing money).  A mother was helping her daughter choose her first lip gloss.  I asked for permission to enter their conversation and they were both delighted. I complimented the mother on guiding her daughter through the maze of colors and textures but I also asked the daughter why she felt the need to add color to her lips at the age of 13?

Of course her answer was because “All” of her friends were wearing it.  Mom was suggesting that she choose a flesh tone or pink to enhance her youthful skin.  As I left them, the young girl had a sheer pink gloss in her hand.  She had made her decision.

I then left for the MAC store where I met a thirty something year old and she was using a gift certificate that she’d received from her brother.  He’d asked her what she wanted for Christmas.   Her answer:  A $300 gift certificate from MAC.  She got it!

I’m more of a skin care person than a make up person but I do wear lip gloss and the occasional lipstick. So like most women I’m always looking for a new shade of gloss. I talked with this young girl about MAC and their selection for at least an hour.

Then I went to one of my favorite spots, Neiman Marcus (often referred to as Needless Markup). I love it when I’m able to watch one snob “hard sell” another snob for a $60 tube of lipstick, with an attitude.  But there’s one thing that I find across the board, whether it’s Wal-Mart or Neiman’s, a woman will always shop for beauty products.

I’ve noticed women working out at the gym or jogging and they’re wearing some type of lip color.  It’s one of the least expensive ways to add color to your face and lift your spirit at the same time.

So again I asked permission to join a conversation at the makeup counter in Neiman Marcus and even these women were open to my questions.  Here is a list of questions that I asked them and you might want to answer them yourself:

• Do you prefer lip gloss or lipstick?
• Do you feel that the quality is better because it’s sold in Neiman Marcus?
• Do you feel that price has a lot to do with quality?
• Do you find that the colors are better because of the store?
• How many tubes of lip color do you own?
• How many tubes do you carry in your purse at one time?
• Do you wear a lip liner with your lip color?
• How long do you wear a lipstick or lip gloss color before you dispose of it?
• Do you plan your lip color purchase by season or on a whim?
• Do you ever leave home without wearing any lip color?

At some point in time I purchased a Nivea A Kiss of Flavor Passion Fruit Tinted Lip Care balm. Then I promptly forgot about it only to discover it the other day. Now, how I could overlook something as lovely as a passion fruit flavor balm, I’ll never know. That is a favorite flavor of mine, and it isn’t very common. On top of it, I like lightly tinted balms.

The Nivea tinted lip balm did not disappoint. The flavor is light, yet tasty, and the tint is quite nice. this one have a bright enough tint with a fair amount of pigment, so you can actually get some decent sheer color form it—something that many tinted balms fail at. Moisturization from the balm is decent. It isn’t best balm I have had and I had to reapply a bit more often than I prefer, but for the trade off of getting a nice tint and a favorite flavor, I really don’t mind.

Nivea tends to run between $2-3 and can be found at most drugstores.

I was asked by Sprint (via Glam media) to write about the most innovative beauty brands. These brands on multiple occasions have been the first to try new creative ideas, leading to further innovations in the realm of beauty. MAC cosmetics leads the way in innovation, both in the creation of new products and in the development of color. With multiple special collections and limited edition products released every month, the brand is constantly putting out new shades and new types of cosmetics. MAC led the way in creating tinted blends of pressed mineral powder, blush, and eye shadow, and their lip products  have evolved from their standard excellent quality lipsticks and glosses into specialty high dazzle items such as dazzle glass and the beautiful creamy cremesheen lip glass. No other brand has the range of shades as MAC, who also leads the way in affordable pigment packed makeup. Their innovation is a primary reason why they have so many fans.

Make Up For Ever

Make Up Forever innovated the concept on high definition makeup, which has become a recent hot item in the cosmetic world. I picked up a Whole Foods Market Organic Tangerine lip balm on a whim. What can I say? I’m a sucker for orange flavor and I tend to fall for in store marketing! So,I have yet another lip balm added to my massive collection, and it is a good one!

The texture is fairly buttery, which I prefer over oily. I like my balms to have some thickness to them, with waxy for outdoors and buttery for regular wear. Ingredients are coconut oil, beeswax, extra virgin olive oil, shea butter, tangerine essential oil, cocoa butter, orange essential oil, hemp seed oil, and vitamin E.  All are organic.

The balm is lightly scented and flavored. It also was quite affordable at $1.99. Usually I complain that Whole Foods is overpriced, but this one is a good value.

The pic isn’t the greatest (taken with the iphone, sorry). But it looks like a standard lip balm–nobody is likely going to buy this one for its packaging appearance!
