When the temperature starts to drop, getting dressed gets more difficult. Just throwing on some jeans, boots and a down jacket starts to get boring after a week. But buying a whole new wardrobe every winter can be really expensive. Luckily, it’s easy to blend summer and winter wardrobes to create layered, fashionable looks that will keep you stylish and warm.
Layering Jeans
Do you have jeans with tears or distressing? Maybe some boyfriend jeans that don’t look so good tucked into boots? Put some tights or leggings on under these types of pants. Cuff your boyfriend jeans and wear them with ankle boots and black tights. You can even wear long capris or cropped pants if you tuck them into knee socks and into your boots. No one will ever know and thick wool socks will keep you warm. Dark, slim jeans look great with thick socks and ankle wedges. The socks work as an extra layer on your legs and look cute. The brighter they are, the better!
Layering Dresses
It might seem like the season for dresses is over, but you can keep wearing them all year-round. Investing in a neutral, cashmere cardigan is good idea. You can wear it over almost any dress and keep your look cute but cozy. A longer or bulkier sweater can be belted over a dress to create a bohemian look. You can even do this with a grandpa sweater and a long cotton summer dress. Throw on some boots and you are instantly boho chic. Some people like to wear long-sleeved shirts under short-sleeved dresses, but this can look tacky if there is a color clash. Use this technique only for certain dresses in certain colors and double-check in the mirror before you leave the house. Wear leggings or thick tights under your dress to keep your legs warm. Opt for knee-high boots for extra warmth, or pair flat military-style boots with thick socks.
Layering Shirts
Even your lightest shirts can be worn in new, cozy ways this winter. Wear a thick button-down over a fitted summer tank. Pair a lighter shirt with a thick, open cardigan, or two in contrasting colors. Belt them to keep your shape. Big scarves go far towards keeping you warm when you’re wearing a low-cut shirt. Get some wool and cashmeres ones in neutral colors to wear with everything, and one in a bright hue, like red, to wear with black, grey and brown. You can even layer tees and tanks under your sweaters. Pair similar shapes but opposing colors for a good look. Belt a giant sweater at the hip and wear another cardigan under it for an extra warm ensemble.
Layering Jackets
Yes, even jackets can be layered. Wear a short, fitted coat under a down vest. Pair a “shell” or lighter jacket with a large peacoat or down jacket. As long as you don’t look like a bag lady, anything goes.
Nicole Rodgers has been blogging in the fashion, fitness, and technology industries for three years. Nicole decided to purchase new clothes for the winter season. She decided to layering would be the best so she picked up some funny t shirts, thermals, and nice hoodies so she could layer up for the winter. She also thought it would be great to pick up some accessories as well. She made sure to pick up new scarves, hats and nail polish to get with all her new clothes.
